You!

Let's Talk about You!

I assume that if you're reading these words right now you are probably experiencing some type of difficulty in your life.

I also realise that you may be thinking a variety of thoughts right now- 'Maybe a Psychologist is not for me', 'Am I in the right place here?', 'What would people say?', or 'I can't be that bad'- and I can definitely understand why you might want to postpone the inevitable or tackle this in private with a self-help book. But in some cases, you just can't.  And unfortunately, the self-help books are not always designed for you and your life specifically.

So let's try a little exercise. I'm going to give you a list of questions.  What I'd like you to do is count up the number of times you agree with one of these questions.  You may not know if you agree right away, so try to feel any sensations inside
of you as you read them.  This will give you an indication of how much you identify emotionally with each question.

The more times you catch yourself saying "yes" or even subtly agreeing with the statement in an emotional way,
the more you will start to realize that you are in the right place here, and that you don't have to face these
issues alone.

So here are the questions... are you ready? By the way, these are some of the real life examples of issues I have dealt with right here in the UAE. Let's begin.

In any given moment of your life, are you:

  • Resentful of someone who has wronged you in some way, but you're not sure how to forgive and / or move

on so you can have some closure?

  • Mentally exhausted because you can't shake the negative way in which you perceive everything?

  • Frustrated because you've been holding onto your problem or secret for years, keeping it bottled

up inside with no one to talk to?

  • Angry at yourself for your habits, lack of assertion, or for wasting years of your life?

  • Wanting to get off your medication but you don't have any coping strategies or you're worried about

     the effects of withdrawal?

  • Thinking that your panic attacks are something you 'just have to put up with'?

  • Worried that you are exhausting your partner, children, or loved ones with your problem or illness?

  • Feeling guilt or shame for something you have done, or for something that has been done to you?

  • Feeling lonely, isolated, trapped, or different because of what you're going through?

  • Tired of feeling like you are at the mercy of everyone around you?

  • Spending all your waking moments controlling how you 'really' feel about circumstances and events

that arise, so as not to disturb the delicate balance of the feelings of others?

  • Needing the approval of others to feel good about yourself?

  • Unsure how to relax, or, don't know how important relaxation and self care are to your peace of mind,

well being, and quality of life?

  • Angry and confused because you've been diagnosed with an illness or disease and sent away

with no psychological or emotional help, or feeling like a number in the medical system?

  • Feeling like you can't talk to anybody? Or that no one will understand? Or that you might be judged

     negatively for breaking your silence?

  • Suffering from aches, pains, digestive complaints, and other physical symptoms when you are stressed or rundown?

  • Feeling like your anxiety, depression, or grief has got the better of you?

  • Avoiding tasks or events because you are scared or because you procrastinate?

  • Prone to harmful behaviours or addictions?

  • Awake at night restless, worrying, and uptight?

  • Feeling vulnerable because of some major life changes?

  • Overcompensating in various ways to make up for perceived or real deficits? (perfectionist tendencies,

     overwhelming need for control etc)

  • Feeling like your life is unbalanced?

OK, how did you do?

Did you feel anything as you read these?

If you did, then today can be a totally new day for you, because today you can actually start feeling some relief from these emotions, so that you can get on with your life and start achieving, doing, and being more.
